Absorption

  • Carbon Block Filters: More effective, also block particles.
    Carbon can be made from wood or coconut shells, with coconut being the best.

Sequestration

Sequestration means stopping minerals like calcium and magnesium from forming limescale. Filters use a small amount of Food-grade polyphosphate to keep these minerals dissolved.

  • It doesn’t remove minerals, so water isn’t softened.
  • Works best in areas with mild hard water. For very hard water, ion exchange is better.

Ion Exchange

This method softens water by swapping hard minerals like calcium and magnesium with sodium or hydrogen. It reduces limescale.

  • Uses resin beads to trap hard minerals.
  • Resin with sodium isn’t ideal for drinking water as it raises salt levels. Hydrogen-based resin is better for this.

Reverse Osmosis

RO pushes water through a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved inorganic solids (such as magnesium and calcium ions) and impurities.

  • Often combined with mechanical (sediment) and absorption (activated carbon) filters for ultra-pure water.
  • Produces waste water and costs more, but it’s great for removing 99.9% of impurities.

Combinations

Each filtration method has limitations on what it can remove, so most filters mix methods to work better. For example:
